Vamp
i shy from the heat and brightness
as i rest uneasily for hours
anticipating the coming of twilight.
i arise with an insatiable hunger and
notice a bright moon rising
which i greet with a half smile.
i stand outside on my balcony and
sip a small glass of red wine and
stare at the distant city lights
which beckon me into an hypnotic trance
that seems to last forever..until the
familiar sounds of voices of children
awaken me with irritable distraction..
i calmly set the glass of wine down
and turn towards the door..
the flames of the fireplace now dancing
their shadows of joy on these stone walls
and smiling i know it is time to
greet the neighboring bedlam of gluttony
as i disappear in a mist into the night
